I was reading this HbbTV attack paper again. I wonder if these holes have been plugged. Does anybody here know if the findings of this paper had any impact?

This is what I do for OpenBSD.

cvsweb.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvs

I mean sometimes I do other stuff, too, but this is why I'm there. XD and presumably my amiable personality 🤔

I read all the non-port commit messages, maybe 600-1000 emails a month, decide what's important or useful for users to know, summarize the changes in readable English and mark them up so people can go read the relevant documentation. In theory I'm doing it every week or two but lately I'm so tired it's like 4-5 weeks, oops.

The file lives at openbsd.org/plus.html and at the end of a release cycle someone grabs and edits it to make the page at XX.html, and people organize and edit that to show off the changes they want users to know about, and then *that* is squished further by someone else into the notes with the actual release, announcing what is new and cool and different and stuff.

(and Kurt is currently doing the upgrade notes so you know what needs a whack between versions)

So when I babble about commits, that's what I mean. 👍

When one doesn't think about the adversarial use cases and relies on fraud assumptions about restricting access to the technology, bad things can and will happen.

See @ekr____@twitter.com ‘s excellent summaries and this piece in particular on why the secrecy of the algorithm is important to prevent adversarial use (and it’s openness too, for other reasons).

An important security assumption against targeted attacks is the secrecy of the hashing algorithm. Well, that failed.

It is not quite a backdoor but it is a proof that any security model that relies on secrecy will fail, sometimes in days.
